If you would like to super charge your guitar playing and song-writing and jam with other musicians with ease, I strongly recommend that you learn the complete set of essential basic chord families.
It will make a huge difference to your playing skills and learning this stuff now can cut years off the process and make things so much easier for you in the long run - it makes A LOT of sense to do this.
You need all the chords from all the families no matter what style of music you play. Even if you only play Metal style power chords, knowing how they fit together as groups will save you a lot of piecing together the info over time.
Once you learn this info you will use it for all your guitar life! For songwriting, jamming or whatever. And once you learn the rules then you can break 'em :)! But for playing as a pro in a covers band you need to know this stuff - it's not difficult once you know what to learn and how to go about it.
Here's some further info I've written on basic chord families regarding that you might like to check out.
