I have a loan of an original 1971 copy of Chord Chemistry for about 15 years now... I keep meaning to return it! Sorry Niall - one day I promise. (Think I'll get the chap a new one at this stage ;-).
This book leans towards the jazz side of things, but the theory and principles apply to all types of music. For the budding AND real serious student. Oh, and recommended by Steve Vai too!
To multiply your Guitar Chord options, I would recommend that you use a good Capo. This will increase your sound options immensely, but don't become too reliant on the Capo. Don't use it as an excuse not to learn your favorite Barre Chords ;-).

I reckon there's enough in these reference books to keep you going for ages. Keep slowly adding more and more chords to your arsenal, but make sure to learn the relationships between each them. The quickest way to learn is to approach it this way, and don't try to remember 1,000's of chords in a Parrot fashion.
